Preparing for our Trip

Once delegates have been selected to represent the City of Barrie as Barrie Youth Ambassadors the leaders begin holding their monthly and then weekly meetings. These meetings are essential in preparing students with information about the culture, language, food, etc. Leaders often organize a night out for Japanese/Chinese food, practice using chopsticks, teach new phrases and assign homework during these meetings. This is a time for the group to not only learn about a different culture but create an important bond with the group they will be traveling with.

Students participate in both an overnight event and a good-bye BBQ. These two evenings are very important for the group to get to know each other and working together to host a BBQ as a thank you and demonstrate what has been completed for their trip.

This experience overall allows a group of students to work together. Although nerves may be apparent about the travel and new experiences, the key is to have a strong group connection and understand that this group (which becomes a family) are all in the same situation and are about to have a life-changing experience together.
